T. J. Choate was born on the 27th of February, 1831, in Maury County, Tenn., son of Richard and Martha (McMackin) Choate, who came from East Tennessee to Maury County at an early day. Both parents are deceased. Our subject was reared in Lawrence County and received limited early education in his boyhood days. Since that he has gained a fair education by careful observation and study. After attaining his majority he began doing for himself, working as a mechanic, and now owns what is known as the Fall River Wool Factory, which he successfully operates. In connection with this he owns and farms 212 acres of land. He was elected magistrate in 1882, and still serves in that capacity. He is a Democrat, and a member in good standing in the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1856 he took for his companion through life Eliza J. Morgan, daughter of Daniel and Mary (Bird) Morgan, and their union was blessed in the birth of eight children: Mary Ellen, Charles A., John Rufus, Nancy, Daniel R., Ella T., James T. and Andrew Lee. Mary Ellen is deceased.
