Ryland L. Halliburton, a farmer of Lauderdale County, is a son of Benjamin and Rebecca (Moore) Halliburton. The father was a native of North Carolina, and the mother of Virginia. They were both consistent members of the Missionary Baptist Church; the father was a soldier of the war of 1812; a farmer by occupation, his political views were Democratic. R. L. Halliburton, the subject of this sketch, was born in Halifax County, Va., September 30, 1821, and was married to Susan F. Halliburton, in October, 1844, the granddaughter of Reuben Pickett, an eminent pioneer minister of the Missionary Baptist Church in Virginia. In the year 1849 R. L. Halliburton removed with his family to Lauderdale County, Tenn., and engaged in farming, and has followed agricultural pursuits up to present writing. He owns a magnificent body of farming lands situated one mile south of Ripley on the line of the Newport News & Mississippi Valley Railroad, well improved and with a splendid steam gin and mill thereon. Mr. and Mrs. Halliburton have three living children—two daughters and one son. The mother, son and one daughter are members of the Baptist Church. The other daughter, the wife of Dr. Morgan Cartwright, is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Mr. Halliburton, in politics, is a conservative Democrat; is not a member of any denomination, but is a firm believer in the Bible and the Christian religion.
