Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Haywood County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1886.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

William V. McMahen, a resident of the Second District of Haywood County, was born April 12, 1823, in Alabama, and is the son of James A. and Mary (Coleman) McMahen; his father was born in South Carolina in 1802, and moved to Tennessee at an early date, first locating in Rutherford County, but in 1822 moved to Alabama, but soon returned to Tennessee, and died in 1832. Our subject’s mother was born in Kentucky in 1801, and died in Hardeman County, Tenn., in 1868. Mr. William McMahen was reared on a farm with his uncle, William McMahen, until he was sixteen years old. In 1842 he commenced farming, which he has continued with success to the present time. In 1852 he was elected constable, and at the same time appointed deputy sheriff, serving in that capacity until 1866, when he moved to Dancyville, and engaged in the mercantile and commission business for five years. In 1870 he was elected magistrate, and served until 1882. December 22, 1842, he married Catharine H. Hill, the daughter of William and Nancy Hill, and granddaughter of Col. Green Hill, who was a pioneer preacher of Williamson County. Of five children born to this marriage, three are living: Mary Louisa (wife of J. N. Stanley), William S. and Mattie W., wife of T. J. Welch. Mr. McMahen is a man of fine character, and is esteemed by all who know him as an upright, Christian gentleman. He and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and he belongs to the Masons, being a chapter member of the Dancyville Lodge, No. 165; in politics he is a Republican.
