Thomas G. McClellan, trustee of Fayette County, is of Scotch-Irish descent, and was born in Jonesboro, Tenn., March 13, 1825, and is the son of Isaac B. and Margaret E. (Grier) McClellan, natives of Virginia and Pennsylvania. Our subject came with his parents to Somerville in 1826, and was raised and educated at this place. From 1840 to 1865 he was in the mercantile business, but was then appointed clerk and master of the chancery court at Somerville, and retained the office until 1870. Mr. McClellan then engaged in the mercantile business for six years, when he was elected tax collector of Fayette County; and when the offices of tax collector and trustee were consolidated in August, 1876, he was elected trustee, and still holds the office, having been re-elected seven times, having given satisfaction as an officer and being highly esteemed as a man. He has been quite successful in all of his business enterprises. In 1837 he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, and is a strictly moral man. August 28, 1848, Mr. McClellan married Fannie E., daughter of Charles B. and Martha (Old) Porter, and they have four children: Mattie B., Fannie M., Mollie L. and Thomas G. Politically Mr. McClellan is a Democrat, and he is a member of the F. & A. M.
