Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Crockett County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1886.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

W. J. Davis is a Virginian, born in 1825, and was one of seven children, three living, born to the marriage of Joshua and Sarah (Green) Davis, natives of Virginia, born in 1784 and 1789, and died March 22, 1843, and 1854, respectively. In 1825 Mr. and Mrs. Davis came to Haywood County, Tenn., and remained until 1827, when they moved to Gibson County, Ind., and there the father died. W. J. Davis, the subject of our sketch, was educated in the public schools of Indiana, and in 1854 married America, daughter of E. B. Bothenia Curtis. Mrs. Davis was born in Dyer County in 1832, and departed this life in June, 1886. Six of her eight children are now living: R. J., Monson, Samuel H., Irene, Beuna and Willie. In 1854 Mr. Davis came back to West Tennessee, where he has since resided. He has always been a farmer, and owns 220 acres of valuable land. He is industrious and a good manager, and success has crowned his efforts. He gives liberally to all worthy enterprises, and in politics is an ardent Republican. He is a worthy citizen and good neighbor, and is esteemed and respected by all.
