Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. Warner & Co.   These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. WILLIAM HEROLD, retired, was born in Germany Nov. 15, 1830, a son of William and Barbara (Reisel) Herold. When seventeen years of age he came to America, located in Pittsburgh, and worked in a rolling-mill until 1850. He then came to McKeesport, and worked as a coal-miner for nine years, and for thirteen years thereafter as a coal-tippler. In 1870, with George Kingenback as partner, he built a sawmill in the Third ward, which he conducted up to January, 1888. In 1887 he erected the fine business-block known as the Herold block, one of the finest business structures in the city. Mr. Herold was married, in 1859, to Augusta, daughter of John and Margaret (Roscher) Kleinlogel, natives of Germany, who settled in Pittsburgh in 1854. The issue of this marriage was five children: William, George, and Katherine born Dec. 5, 1859, died Nov. 6, 1879, was married to George Langin October, 1877, and the issue of this marriage was two children, Anton and William; Margaret, born Nov. 4, 1863, died Sept. 30,1879; John Nicholas, born Dec. 19, 1860, died Aug. 10, 1863. Mr. Herold and wife are members of the German Protestant Church. He is an Odd-Fellow; politically a democrat.
