Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. Warner & Co.   These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. SAMUEL W. SHAW, farmer, post office McKeesport, son of David and Mary J. (Muse) Shaw, was born in Versailles township, in 1857. Maj. William Shaw, a native of County Down, Ireland, settled on what is known as the Shaw homestead about one hundred years ago. He was married three times, and had a family of nineteen children. His second family of children were Robert, William, James, Samuel, David, Margaret, Martha, Ann, Nancy and Sarah, all deceased but the last two. David, father of S. W., married, in 1849, Mary J., daughter of Fauntly Muse, of Versailles township, and they located at Saltsburg, where he was engaged in the coal business, the firm being Shaw & Whigham. There they remained six or seven years, and then removed to the farm in Versailles and commenced farming. Their children were Cornelius N. (deceased, and formerly of the Dispatch), Martha C., Minard (deceased), Lizzie S. (now Mrs. John R. Cristy, of Versailles township), S. W., Bell R., Blanche M. and Jennie M. David Shaw died in 1880; his widow still has her residence on the old farm. Samuel W. is engaged in farming, his home being where his forefathers dwelt for one hundred years. He is a member of the U. P. Church of McKeesport.
