Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. Warner & Co.   These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. OWEN SHEEKEY, post office Rankin Station, is a native of Ireland, born in 1848, and at twenty years of age immigrated to America. He was educated at the common schools in Ireland, and on coming to this country served a three years’ apprenticeship at the trade of tanner and currier in Pittsburgh. For seven years he owned and managed the Fayette tannery at Ohio Pyle, Fayette county, Pa. In the spring of 1884 he located at Rankin Station, Pa., and with John E. Downing, of Pittsburgh, he built the Fort Pitt tannery, carried on under the name of John E. Downing & Co. until May, 1886, at which time the firm dissolved, continuing under the title of Owen Sheekey & Co. The tannery, which is located on the line of the B. & O. R. R., near Rankin Station, covers four acres, and the building proper is 100x185 feet, and the bark-shed 54x100, the machinery being propelled by a sixty-horse-power engine; two boilers; capacity one hundred hides a day; thirty men employed. Mr. Sheekey is a democrat.
