Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. JOSEPH HATCH, farmer, post office Bennett, was born Jan. 1, 1818, in Massachusetts, son of Ebenezer Hatch, who was born in 1774, in Barnstable county, Mass. The Hatch ancestry, Davis and Cushman, came over in the Mayflower in 1620. Ebenezer Hatch learned the ship-building trade in South Carolina. He married, in Maine, Statirah Blanchard, who became the mother of six children: Sabra, Eunice, Elizabeth, Nathaniel B., Joseph and Davis P. Ebenezer came to this county in 1807, and followed his trade in Pittsburgh, where he built the first brick house. Joseph learned the wagon-maker’s and painter’s trades and surveying, which he followed at different times. When a young man he taught school for ten years. He married Nancy Jane McFerrin, who died Feb. 24, 1875, a Presbyterian. Of her children, two are living: Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson and Mrs. Nancy J. Schar. Mr. Hatch has been a farmer forty-five years. He is a Presbyterian; has been a republican, is now a prohibitionist.
