Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. JOSEPH FRANK ERNY, bank cashier, Pittsburgh, was born in that city in 1859, and is a son of Frank A. and Elizabeth Erny. His grandfather, Michael Erny, and father came from Germany to Pittsburgh. The former was a locksmith, but retired from business soon after arriving here, and died in 1873; the latter is a prominent undertaker and proprietor of livery on the South Side. Frank A. Erny here married Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob Heisel, an old resident of the city. Joseph F. Erny was educated in the city schools and at St. Vincent’s College in Westmoreland county, Pa.; graduated at Duff’s Business College, and was employed four years in assisting his father. In 1879 he entered the German Savings and Deposit Bank as messenger and by gradual promotions became cashier in 1885. He is a member of St. Michael’s R. C. Church; in politics he is independent.
