Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. Warner & Co.   These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. JOHN C. SLOAN, M. D., Bakerstown, is a son of James and Mary A. (Campbell) Sloan, natives of Ireland and McCandless township, this county, respectively. His maternal grandfather, John Campbell, was a native of Ireland, immigrated to America in 1809, and died in 1866. Mr. and Mrs. James Sloan were parents of four children: Nancy, wife of Matthew McMillan, in Fayette county; Robert, in Kansas; Joseph and John C. The last named is the eldest, and was born in McCandless township in 1839. He received his early education at the public schools of the township, and graduated from Ohio Medical College, Cincinnati, in 1869. He then engaged for two years in the practice of his profession in Allegheny, moving thence to Charlotte county, Va.; but after three years he again came to Allegheny, and since 1885 has resided at his present location. In 1863 the doctor enlisted for three months in Co. C, 53d P. V., re-enlisted in 1865 in Co. H, 78th P. V., and served until the close of the war. In 1873 he married Mary, daughter of John Fulton, of Allegheny, and four children have been born to them: Anna M., Emma, Howard Renwick and Luella Elizabeth. Dr. and Mrs. Sloan are members of the R. P. Church, of which he is elder.
