JAMES ROSS HOLMES is a son of John Holmes, who with his wife emigrated to this county and settled in Temperanceville. James was a mechanic by trade, and in 1852 married Mary Ann, daughter of James R. and Sarah (Harnett) Fleming. To them were born five children, four of whom are now living: John F., James R., Andrew Ross and David D. The father and husband died in 1879; his widow now resides on the old homestead, which was her father’s property.
