Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. J. M. Hammond, carpenter, Etna, was born Sept. 19, 1828, in Harrison county, Ohio, the son of David P. Hammond, who is a native of Washington county, Pa. He was reared and educated in Guernsey county, Ohio, came to the city of Allegheny in 1849, and learned the carpenter’s trade, which he followed for some time. He went to Kansas in May, 1855, where he was with John Brown and Lane, and participated in the border warfare. In February, 1862, he enlisted in Co. B, 2d Mo. Cav.; was wounded, and taken prisoner by the notorious Quantrell, who treated him well, and set him at liberty. In May, 1863, he was discharged for disability, at hospital. After the war Mr. Hammond returned to Pittsburgh, where he worked in a cork factory, and later followed his trade, coming to Etna in 1867, where he now resides. In Ohio he married Margaret Glass, and they have four children: Emma J., Anna, Charles F. and Agnes. Mr. Hammond is a republican, and has been burgess and councilman for many years.
