GEORGE VILSACK, farmer, post office Bennett, was born April 15, 1837, in Pittsburgh, Pa., son of Anton and Catharine (Farmorie) Vilsack, former of whom was a native of Carlsruhe, Baden, Germany, latter of Alsace, France (now Germany). Anton Vilsack came to Pittsburgh in 1835, where he followed his trade, that of carpenter. He removed to Shaler township, where he engaged in farming, and died here quite young; his widow lived to be over eighty years of age. They were the parents of four children: George, Leopold, Catharine and Elizabeth. The subject of this memoir is a farmer, but was previously employed in the Sharpsburg mills. He married Mary Bavelon, native of this county, and they are the parents of four children: Maria, Joseph, Anna and Lena. Mr. and Mrs. Vilsack are members of the Catholic Church; politically he is a democrat.
