Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. ANDREW W. CROOKS, farmer, post office North Star, was born in 1852, in Washington county, Pa., a son of Richard and Hannah (Walker) Crooks, and grandson of Henry and Catherine (Donaldson) Crooks. Richard, the eldest of three children, was born in 1822, and is now a prosperous farmer in Washington county. Hannah Walker is a daughter of John Walker, and granddaughter of James and Mary (Andrews) Walker. James Walker emigrated to Allegheny county from Ohio in or about 1800. He was born in 1795, and died in 1876. His first purchase of land was one hundred acres, but at his death he owned a tract of 226 acres, all of which is valuable. Andrew W. Crooks was born and reared on a farm, and educated at Mansfield Academy and Washington and Jefferson College. He has followed farming as an occupation. He married, in 1876, Ida, daughter of A. D. and Martha (Ball) Burns, and three children bless their union: Ferna Dorcas, James Burns and Walker Donaldson. Our subject, at his grandfather’s death, inherited one hundred acres of the homestead farm. Mr. and Mrs. Crooks are members of the Presbyterian Church; he is a republican.
