Below is a family biography included in The History of Darke County, Ohio published by W. H. Beers & Co. in 1880.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. LEVI S. GILBERT, farmer, P. O. Gettysburg, Ohio; a son of Levi and Marian Gilbert; was born in Lancaster Co., Penn., on the 13th day of September 1835; came with his parents to Ohio, locating in Miami Co., and in 1842 removing to Darke Co, where he spent his boyhood days on his father’s farm, receiving his education in the district school; at the age of 16, he commenced to learn the coopering trade in his father’s shop; he followed his trade about sixteen years, four years of which he worked in Gettysburg; in 1863, he sold out his shop and purchased a farm of 124 acres in Sec. 29, Adams Township, where he moved and has since resided; he now has ninety acres in a good state of cultivation, a beautiful brick house; a barn, 80x47 feet, which he erected at a cost of about $1,500; on the 29th day of September, 1869, he celebrated his marriage with Rosana, daughter of Mathias and Arnstena, who was born in Montgomery Co., on the 28th day of December, 1840; five children have been born to them, viz., Elmer B., born August 9, 1862; Nora May, born December 5, 1865; Harry A., born Feb. 17, 1867; Edith J., born March 25, 1869; Raymond M., born March 7, 1874, Mr. Gilbert has accumulated a considerable amount of property, in which he has been nobly assisted by his good and amiable wife; he is strictly temperate in all his habits. In 1864, he enlisted in the 100-day service and went forth in defense of his country.
