My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography included in the book,  Biographical Souvenir of the Counties of Buffalo, Kearney, Phelps, Harlan and Franklin, Nebraska published in 1890 by F. A. Battey & Company.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILL BREBNER is a native of Scotland, and was born April 4, 1861. He came to the United States in 1877, landing in New York city July 4, and came to Franklin county, Nebr., in the fall of 1877, and here took a homestead. He was accompanied by his mother, who kept house for him until her death, which occurred in 1889, and to whose wise counsel, untiring zeal and energy in his behalf, he attributes much of his present success.

Our subject came to this county with very limited means (having but $4.50 in his pocket when he arrived here) and settled in a pretty new section of the country, where he built a sod house, but by hard work and rigid economy he has made for himself a comfortable home already. He owns four hundred and eighty acres of land, some of which is very productive and yields abundant crops, and he has great faith in the future of Nebraska.

He is an independent republican in politics, and has been elected to the position of assessor of his township two terms. He is also an officer of the Farmers’ Alliance, and takes an active interest in the workings of that organization. He is an energetic and highly respected young man.
