Below is a family biography included in The History of Wright County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Samuel O. Shields, collector-elect of Wright County, Mo., was born in Pulaski County, Mo., in 1849, the son of Arnett and Nancy (Richardson) Shields. Arnett Shields was born in Roane County, Tenn., February 14, 1816, was a farmer by occupation, and came to Missouri in May, 1837, locating in what is now Wright County, and died there February 3, 1888. He was one of the associate judges of Wright County Court during the war. He enlisted for the Mexican War, but his company was not called out. During the Civil War he was a member of the Twenty-fourth Missouri Regiment Volunteers, but was discharged on account of being too old. He was married twice, in Missouri, his second wife being Miss Nancy Richardson, who bore him eight children, who grew to maturity. There were three children by the first wife, one of whom is now alive. Samuel O. Shields grew to manhood in Wright County, and has acquired a limited education by personal application. He was married at the age of twenty-one years to Miss Sarah J. Smith, who bore him four children, three now living: John, Arnett and Charles. The one deceased was named David. Mr. Shields has been engaged in farming, and for the past six or eight years has been occupied in trading in stock, shipping and driving cattle. He is the owner of 460 acres of land. He is a Democrat in politics, and was elected collector on the Labor ticket. His paternal grandfather was a native of Tennessee, and came to Missouri in 1837, where he died in Webster County, at the age of sixty-five years. He was a soldier in the War of 1812. The paternal great-grandfather was a native of Ireland, who immigrated to America, and located in Tennessee. The Richardsons were originally from Tennessee. Mr. Shields is one of the enterprising, progressive men of the county, and is respected, and esteemed by all who know him.
