David J. Stice, a well-known farmer and stock dealer of Mount Pleasant Township, was born near where he now resides, August 2, 1837, and is the son of Jesse and Lavina (March) Stice. The father was born in Kentucky, January 7, 1809, and was of German descent. He came with his parents from Kentucky to Howard County, Mo., when a boy, and lived in Monroe and Boone Counties until coming to Scotland County. He was the first white man to build a house in the county, coming here in 1827, and remained there until he moved to Queen City, in 1877. He was a farmer the principal part of his life, and was a well-respected citizen. He died in Schuyler County, Mo., April 27, 1887. The mother of our subject, also a native of Kentucky, was of German descent, and died in Scotland County, Mo., about 1844. Both parents were members of the Christian Church. David was the eighth of eleven children, eight of whom are now living. He received his education in the common schools of Scotland County, and remained with and worked for his father until his marriage, which occurred September 25,1856, to Miss Ann Eliza Humphrey, a daughter of William K. Humphrey, and a native of Washington County, Ky., born April 26, 1835. To them were born nine children, five now living: Sarah E., Arthur C., Cornelia, Melvina, Ruth; and those deceased are William H., Asa, Lillian and Augusta. Mr. Stice has a fine farm given him by his father, which he has improved, and of which he can be justly proud. During the late war he served six months in Col. Purmort’s command, and was in several skirmishes. He and wife are worthy members of the Christian Church, and he is decidedly in favor of the prohibition of the liquor traffic. He is a good citizen and an excellent man.
