William D. Reynolds is the son of Berry Reynolds, who came to this State from Robertson County, Penn., and settled on Clear Creek in December, 1839, bringing his family with him. His wife, Anna Hutchinson, was a native of Tennessee. To them were born fifteen children (thirteen of whom lived to maturity): Elizabeth, Sanford J., Sallie, Judie, Polly, William D., Richard, James, Thomas, Alexander, Jemima, Margaret, Samuel, Joseph and Rhoda. Mr. Reynolds was one of the oldest settlers of Missouri, and owned upward of 240 acres of land. During the late war the State Militia burned him out, took his stock, and robbed him of most of his property. He was a quiet, good-natured man, never harmed anyone, but expressed his opinions freely. For this his property was destroyed, and he was obliged to move to Benton County, Ark., for safety. Here he remained until the close of the war, but returned to Missouri in 1865, where he passed the remainder of his life. He died December 29, 1887, at the age of ninety-one. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and a Democrat in politics. His son William D. was born in Robinson County, Tenn., in 1832, and came to this county with his father when a mere lad. He attained his growth at home, and at the breaking out of the late war enlisted in the Confederate army, first in the six months’ service, and then in Shelby’s brigade, where he served until the close of the war. He was in the battles of Wilson’s Creek and Newtonia, and many skirmishes. He was wounded at the battle of Helena, July 4, 1863, shot through the hip, and was in the hospital for several months. January 17, 1867, he married Miss Mahala E. A. Garrett, daughter of Presley and Naomi (Reed) Garrett. To Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds were born three children: Ann N. (who died), John W. and Ollie A. Mr. Reynolds bought the farm he now owns of his father, and has since resided on same and reared his family. In his religious views Mr. Reynolds is a Cumberland Presbyterian, and politically he is a stanch Democrat. He is a member of one of the oldest and most respected families of Newton County, and is an honest, upright citizen, respected by all who know him.
