Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

James Huffman, farmer, came to Newtonia Township from Clinton County, Ind., May 17, 1837. He was born in Berkeley County, W. Va., January 11, 1818, and is the son of Abram and Susan (Myers) Huffman, both natives of Virginia. Shortly after reaching Newton County Mr. Huffman married Miss Jane Shannon, a native of Arkansas, and the daughter of Hugh and Jane (Marrs) Shannon, natives of Kentucky. To Mr. and Mrs. Huffman were born seven chiidren, three sons and four daughters, named as follows: William (who was in the Confederate service, and died while a prisoner of war), Mary Virginia (wife of Isaac Majors), Annetta (wife of William H. Wheeler), John, Joseph P., Emma (wife of John W. Liles) and Eliza (wife of John Myers). Mr. Huffman has given each of his children a good home, and still has a section of land. He has a large family of grandchildren, twenty-three in all. He has been a member of the school board, has been a justice of the peace, and has also been postmaster. He carried on a nursery for over twenty-five years. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and is liberal in his religious belief, but inclines to the Presbyterian faith.
