Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. James Elliott was born in Yorkshire, England, December 9, 1820, and is a son of James and Phyllis (Lomby) Elliott. The father was a miller by trade, and he and his wife were the parents of the following named children: Joseph, Ralph, Thomas and James. The latter began working in the coal mines in Durham, England, and while there married Jane Mason, a daughter of Miles Mason, of the County of Northumberland, England. Mr. and Mrs. Elliott became the parents of six children who lived to maturity: Mary J., Phyllis E., Sarah E., Alice, Miles and Thomas. Mary J. married James Douthet, and by him is the mother of three children: Clay, Kirk and Clyde; Sarah E. married James H. Alberly, and they have two children: Everett and Erma; Phyllis E. is a teacher in the public schools. The family came to the United States in 1854, and settled in Kentucky, where the father worked in coal mines, and also in Ohio and Indiana. In 1867 Mr. Elliott came to Newton County, Mo., where he purchased a farm of eighty acres and has since resided. He is a member of the Church of England, and in politics is a Democrat, but voted for Lincoln and Grant. He was a Union man during the war.
