Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Hon. George W. Harrison, a successful practicing physician of Newton County, was born in Overton County, Tenn., January 19, 1852, and is the son of Joseph and Penina (Gunnels) Harrison, descendants of old families, and both can trace their ancestors back to the early settlers of the country. George W. Harrison, at the age of eighteen, began the study of medicine in the office of Dr. Chilton, of Albany, Ky. He graduated in medicine from the Miami College, Ohio, in the spring of 1873, and practiced his profession in Kentucky two years. In 1875 he located in Newton County, where he has remained ever since. He has contributed some to medical journals, and is a member of the Southwest Missouri Medical Society. In 1888 he helped to form the Newton County Medical Society, and was made its first president. He is a member of the I. O. O. F., is a Democrat in politics, and was elected to represent Newton County in the State Legislature, 1884. While in Kentucky he married Miss Ella Hancock, a daughter of Dr. W. L. Hancock, of Newton County, but formerly of Albany, Ky. Two sons and two daughters were born to this union: Edward, Bertha, Jimmie and Eula. Dr. Harrison is engaged in farming and stock raising in connection with his professional duties; also does a good drug business in the town in which he lives. He has made quite a reputation in his vicinity as a surgeon.
