Alexander Zane was born near Wheeling, Oliver Co., W. Va., July 18,1841, and is the son of Noah Ebenezer and Jane (Long) Zane, and the grandson of the celebrated Ebenezer Zane, who founded the cities of Zanesville and Columbus, in the State of Ohio, and Wheeling, in West Virginia. He was a very prominent man in his day. Noah E. Zane was born in West Virginia also, and was there married to Miss Long, who was born in Ohio and educated in Wheeling. They removed to Kansas with the Wyandotte tribe, and there remained until their deaths, the father dying in 1866, and the mother in 1865. When their son Alexander arrived at a suitable age to attend school, none was to be found in his neighborhood, and consequently he was sent to Uniontown, Penn., where he attended the academy two and a half years. He then returned and attended Prairie Point Academy for two years, after which he came home. He was then engaged in driving cattle across the plains, making six trips to Colorado. He then purchased several tracts of land in Wyandotte County, Kas., and there remained until the Wyandottes purchased their land in the Indian Territory from the Senecas, when he removed to Wyandotte Reservation, Indian Territory, in 1869, and to where he now lives in 1876, having purchased the same in 1874. He assisted in building the Little Rock & Fort Smith Railroad before farming had been, commenced in that vicinity. He has been burned out twice in the last twelve years. He has 160 acres under cultivation, and has fruit of various kinds, including peaches, apples, grapes, etc. Mr. Zane was married March 5, 1876, to Miss Lacey Ann Van Slack, a native of Virginia, born in Franklin County. Four children were born to this union: Isabel (who is attending the Wyandotte boarding-school), Noah, Oela and Julia. During the late war (1863) Mr. Zane enlisted in the service of the Union in Company A, Sixth Kansas, and was in active duty for nearly two years in Arkansas. He participated at Wilson’s Creek, Elkhorn, Prairie Grove, Newtonia, Mo., Dry Wood. He re-enlisted in the Fifteenth Kansas, and with that was engaged at Lexington, Independence, Westport, Mine Creek and numerous skirmishes. Mr. Zane is a member of the Grand Army Post at Seneca, Seneca Post, No. 175, Department of Missouri, and he is the officer of the day in the post. Mr. Zane has in his possession a tomahawk which was presented to the Wyandottes by the British Government over 175 years ago. He has all the latest improvements in farming implements, and is doing well.
