Below is a family biography included in The History of Moniteau County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

William F. Jahn, a farmer of Linn Township, Moniteau County, was born in Cooper County, Mo., in 1833, and is a son of Christoph G. and Ruth (Martin) Jahn. The father was born in Saxony, Germany, in November, 1802, and was a potter by trade, which he followed as a journeyman until 1830, when he immigrated to America; he remained a short time in St. Louis, and in the spring of 1831 located in Boonville, where he worked at his trade three years, subsequently purchasing a farm in Cooper County, which he cultivated until 1840. In the latter year he sold out and removed to Moniteau County, where he entered land and spent the remainder of his life, his death occurring in October, 1876. His wife was born in Cumberland, Ky., in April, 1807, and when a child removed to Tennessee with her parents, afterward moving to Missouri with her brothers, the parents having died in Tennessee. Mrs. Jahn died in September, 1859, the mother of eleven children, of whom four are living, viz.: William F., Mary R., Matilda and Martin L. William F. was reared to the pursuit of farming, and lived with his parents until about thirty years of age, when he married and settled where he now lives. During the late war he served about nine months in the Eighteenth Missouri Regiment, Union Army, under Sherman’s command, receiving his discharge at St. Louis. He married Judida S. Phipps, who was born in Moniteau County, November 22, 1853, and is a daughter of Willis and Elizabeth (Smith) Phipps. Willis Phipps was a native of Kentucky, and when a young man went to Missouri, where he followed farming; he died July 19, 1875, at the age of sixty-one years, and a member of the Baptist Church. His wife was born in Missouri July 17, 1819, and is still living in Boone County; they had twelve children, of whom eleven are living: Elizabeth, William, Martha A., Lucy E., Charles E., Judida S., Melinda C., Columbus M., James, George P. and Sarah M. John R. died at the age of seven years. To Mr. and Mrs. Jahn eight children have been born, of whom five survive, viz.: Christoph W., Mary E., Benjamin F., Maggie L. and Minnie M. The parents are members of the Methodist Church.
