Robert H. Garretson, commissioner of the schools of Moniteau County and one of the principal educators of that county, was born in Allen County, Ohio, June 24, 1848, and is the son of William Garretson, a native of Pennsylvania, and Martha (Swan) Garretson, a native of Maryland. Both parents died in Ohio. Robert H. Garretson grew to manhood in Allen County, Ohio, and received a good practical education in the common and higher schools of the county. He commenced teaching in his native county at the age of nineteen years. In 1863 he enlisted in the Fifty-fourth Ohio Infantry, served until the close of the war, and was discharged at Little Rock. He participated in the Atlanta campaign and Sherman’s march to the sea, and was in all the engagements. After the war he taught in Ohio until 1868, when he came west to Missouri and located in Moniteau County. There he has been engaged in teaching ever since. He was elected commissioner of the schools of the county in April, 1889. Mr. Garretson was married in this county January 27, 1874, to Miss Haseltine Moore, a native of Moniteau County, where she was reared and educated. The fruits of this union are six children, who are named as follows: Byron, Carleton, Harvey, Claude, Fannie and Harry Oscar. Mr. Garretson is a member of the G. A. R. organization, and his wife is a member of the Christian Church.
