Lewis F. Burgi, of the firm of Meyers & Burgi, druggists of Jamestown, was born in Linn Township, Moniteau County, in 1849, and is a son of Andreas and Elizabeth Burgi, the former a native of Baden, Germany, and the latter of Biren, Germany. Andreas Burgi was born in Walshood, in Baden, Germany, in 1800, where he was reared and educated and learned the trade of a coppersmith, which he followed in his native country until 1833, when he immigrated to America; he landed in New York, and from there went to Philadelphia, where he worked at his trade several years, removing to Jefferson City, Mo., in 1847. From Jefferson City he went to Boonville, Mo., where he remained but a short time, and then located on a farm in Moniteau County, four and a half miles east of Jamestown, where he remained until his death, which occurred in 1873. He was twice married, his first wife dying soon after their immigration to Philadelphia; they had four children, but one of whom is now living, John Burgi. The father was married the second time, in Jefferson City, to Mrs. Elizabeth Gabert, a widow, who came to America with her husband and three children about 1833. One child by her first marriage survives, viz., Henry Gabert, and two children by her union with Mr. Burgi, Lewis F., our subject, and Elizabeth, wife of Louis Miller. Mrs. Burgi died in 1869; both parents were members of the Catholic Church. Lewis F. was reared to the pursuit of farming, receiving his education in the common schools. He engaged in railroading for some time, but in 1872 located on a farm, which occupation he followed until 1881, when he sold out, and in partnership with J. C. Meyers engaged in the drug business in Jamestown, to which he has ever since devoted his attention. They command a large patronage and are doing a safe and successful business. In 1876 Mr. Burgi married Elizabeth Muri, who was born in Moniteau County in 1854, and is a daughter of John Muri. Three children have been born to this union, but one of whom is living, Emma, who was born March 21, 1878. Franklin O. died at the age of twenty-four days, and an infant died unnamed. Mrs. Burgi is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is town treasurer, and an enterprising, highly respected citizen of Jamestown.
