Below is a family biography included in The History of Moniteau County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

L. M. Culler, proprietor of the City Hotel, is a native of Richland County, Ohio, and the son of Jacob S. and Ellen (Donaldson) Culler, natives of Maryland and West Virginia, respectively. The father was a farmer by occupation, was a member of the English Lutheran Church, and was an-active worker in the same. L. M. Culler attained his growth on his father’s farm, was educated in the common schools, also the select schools, and at the age of twenty-one years engaged in farming for himself on rented land. This he continued a year, and in 1866 immigrated to Cooper County, Mo., where he purchased a farm of 100 acres of improved land. Here he remained two years, after which he sold out, and purchased 160 acres of improved land in the same county. At the end of five years he again sold out and bought another tract of 193 acres in same county. Here he remained another five years, when he moved to Tipton, rented the farm and embarked in the livery business. He also engaged in buying and shipping horses and mules to St. Louis, which business he continued for three years. He again sold out, went to Kansas City in 1881, and here resumed the livery business for a few months, when a storm destroyed almost his entire stock. He then carried on a sale stable for a few months, but later moved to St. Louis, Mo., where he again started the livery business, and this continued all year. He then engaged with G. W. Crouch as traveling buyer of horses and mules, which business he followed for a year and a half, after which he came to Tipton and took charge of the City Hotel, which he has successfully conducted ever since. He was married in 1860 to Miss Elizabeth C. Crane, daughter of Jacob Crane, and the result of this marriage was three children: Emma P., wife of P. D. Spaulding, of Kansas City; Elmer E., clerk in the auditor’s office at Topeka, Kan., and Hortense R. Mr. and Mrs. Culler are members of the Presbyterian Church, as are also the son and daughters, and Mr. Culler is deacon and Sunday-school superintendent. He is a Mason, Junior Warden, an Odd Fellow, and is a Master Workman in the A. O. U. W. He is a Republican.
