John G. McPherson was born near Tipton, Mo., November 8, 1848, being a son of John G. and grandson of Aaron McPherson, the latter a Kentuckian, who came to Missouri previous to 1821, and here reared a family of six children, and spent the remainder of his days engaged in farming. His son, John G., was born in Missouri, August 18, 1821, and, like his father, was a tiller of the soil. In 1842 he wedded Miss Elizabeth Gilbert, who was born in Kentucky July 22, 1822, by whom he became the father of three children: Benjamin F. (deceased), an infant not named, also deceased, and John G., who was born about two months after his father’s death. His widow was afterward married to G. J. Robertson, who was a deacon in the Baptist Church, and died in 1870. She is a member of the Baptist Church, and makes her home with her son, John G. McPherson. She was the second of eleven children born to Benjamin and Anna Gilbert, and when about ten years of age was taken by her parents to St. Louis County, Mo., and later to Pike County, where they resided three years, and after a three years’ residence in Cooper County came to Moniteau County. Her father died in 1865, and her mother in 1880, at the age of eighty-four years. John G. McPherson, whose name heads this sketch, made his home with his mother and stepfather until the latter’s death, when his mother began making her home with him. He received a thorough education in the common schools and the State University, and in April, 1870, located on his present farm. February 3, 1876, he wedded Mary Hill, who was born in Moniteau County, September 9, 1857, her parents being Isaac and Sally Hill, early settlers of the county, who are now living in Pilot Grove Township. Mr. and Mrs. McPherson have one child, Nannie Myrtle, who was born September 21, 1883. They are members of the Baptist Church, of which he is treasurer, and in his political views he is a Democrat.
