James M. Dunlap, M. D. Health is the most precious gift of nature; and how to retain it, and how to regain it when lost, are matters of vital interest. Some seek for health in travel, others in physical recreation, and both are, no doubt, beneficial, but they do not always accomplish the object in view. Medical science must be resorted to, and the skilled physician is in constant demand. Dr. Dunlap was born in Knoxville, Tenn., in 1834, and is the son of William and Martha (Yarnell) Dunlap, the former a native of Virginia, born in 1802, and died in 1882, and the latter a native of East Tennessee, born in 1800, and died in 1878. The father moved from Virginia to Tennessee when young, was a farmer by occupation, and also filled the position of sheriff of Knox County, Tenn., for many years. He moved to Moniteau County, Mo., in 1838, was elected to the Senate from his district in 1852, and served one term. He was also justice of the peace for many years in Moniteau County. To his marriage were born nine children, six now living: Dr. M. A. Dunlap, Sarah A. Latham, Mary De Foe, Martha Aldridge, Henry J. and James M. The paternal grandfather, George Dunlap, was a native of Scotland, and the maternal grandfather, Mordecai Yarnell, was born in Tennessee, and died in 1844. He was justice of the peace the principal part of his life. Dr. James M. Dunlap was but four years of age when he came to Moniteau County, Mo. His parents gave him such education as the country afforded until he was twelve years of age, when he went to live with his brother-in-law, Thomas G. Lancaster, and studied in that gentleman’s office for four years, taking a full course of mathematics and surveying. After this he practiced surveying for one year, and then began reading medicine. This he continued under Dr. William Redmon for four years, attended the St. Louis Medical College from 1853 to 1857, and graduated from that college in the last named year. He attended college during college months, and practiced medicine between times. His first professional work was done in High Point, in 1854, and there he has practiced ever since. He attended the Missouri Medical College at St. Louis in 1870, taking the degree of addendum. He was married July 7, 1859, to Miss Jennie Kelly, who was born in St. Louis County, Mo., in 1842, and who was the daughter of Henry W. and Susan (Latham) Kelly, both natives of Virginia. Mrs. Dunlap died in 1875, and in 1876 Dr. Dunlap married Miss Hattie E. Huntington, of Benzonia, Mich., who was born in Linn, Mass., in 1842, and who is the daughter of William O. and Elizabeth (Oliver) Huntington, both natives of Massachusetts. By his first marriage Dr. Dunlap became the father of five children, four living: Susan Powers, Maggie Osborne, Emma and Sallie. The one deceased was named Charley. One child, Walter H., was born to the second marriage. He is now deceased. Dr. D. is a Democrat politically; his first vote was for Gen. Scott, in 1852. He is a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows orders.
