Benedict Eberhardt, who is closely associated with the farming interests of Moniteau County, was born in Canton Berne, Switzerland, October 3, 1833. His parents, John and Barbara A. (Stoll) Eberhardt, were also natives of Switzerland. The parents left Europe March 15, 1845, going through France in wagons to reach the coast, and were twenty-three days in making the trip. They sailed from Havre de Grace, and reached New York May 18, after an ocean voyage of thirty-six days. They came on to Ohio and settled in Tuscarawas County, where they remained until 1860, the father being engaged in farming. They then came down the river and settled in Moniteau County, Mo., in April, 1860. He located on the farm now owned by Andrew Miller, which he bought and farmed for many years. He died in February, 1875, and the mother January 22, 1870. To their happy marriage were born eight children, five now living: Nicholas, Annie, Elizabeth, Benedict and Frederick. Benedict Eberhardt was but eleven and one-half years of age when he left Switzerland for America. He was reared and educated principally in the German language while in his native country, and after coming to America was made familiar with English, and also assisted his father on the farm. This occupation he has since followed, and is now the owner of 257 acres of land. He raises stock, but turns his attention principally to the raising of grain. During the war he served in the Enrolled Militia, also the Home Guards, and was in several skirmishes. In 1863 he married Miss Catherine Dahl, a native of Bavaria, Germany, and to them were born four children, three now living: Sarah E., Daniel E. G. and Victor William. The one deceased was named Clarinda.
