Below is a family biography included in The History of McDonald County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. John C. Crispin was born in Keokuk County, Iowa, on February 29, 1848. His father, Hon. George Crispin, was born near Philadelphia, Penn., on January 13, 1798. He was an intelligent and educated man, and for several years was a teacher in Bustleton Academy, Pennsylvania, and also taught school many years after he became a resident of Iowa. By trade he was a nail cutter, and for seventeen years was employed in Irving’s Iron Works at Milesly, Penn. In 1846 he emigrated from his native State to Iowa, locating in Keokuk County, where he became a prominent and trusted citizen. He served the county in the capacity of surveyor and county judge, and in 1860 took the census. John C. Crispin spent the most of his early life on a farm in his native county, and in the spring of 1873 went to Lincoln County, Kas. Thence he came to Saratoga, Mo., in December, 1883, and engaged in his present general merchandising business in 1887. In June, 1883, he was united in marriage with Mary Newman, who was born in North Adams, Mass., on January 27, 1866. She is a daughter of Nicholas Newman, now a resident of Saratoga, Mo. To Mr. and Mrs. Crispin have been born two children: John N. (deceased) and Cora. Mr. Crispin is the present postmaster at Saratoga.
