George W. Corum, proprietor of Corum House, South West City, Mo., was born in Bonneville, Mo., on June 27, 1837. He is a son of Hardin Corum, of Oregon, to which distant State he with his family emigrated in 1850. George W. was reared and educated in his native city, and early learned the saddle and harness trade. In 1852 he crossed the plains and joined his parents in Oregon. He remained there until the spring of 1880 engaged in the harness business and mining. Upon his return from the West Mr. Corum came to McDonald County and located on a farm on Elk River, which he cultivated for one year, after which he came to South West City and engaged in the hotel business. The Corum House is a first-class hotel in every respect, well fitted to accommodate commercial travelers and the traveling public in general. For the past two years Mr. Corum has served as school director in South West City. His marriage with Mrs. Margaret F. Howe was celebrated on April 12, 1880. She is a daughter of Col. J. D. Shields, of South West City, and is the mother of four children by her first husband, viz.: Lee, Albert, Benjamin and Jeptha. Mr. Corum is a member of the Masonic order, and while in Oregon was a member of the Sons of Temperance. Mrs. Corum is a devout Christian and a member of the Christian Church.
