David Vanpool was born in Rowan County, N. C., on May 26, 1819. He is a son of David Vanpool (deceased), also a native of Rowan County, who removed to West Tennessee in 1824. Thence he removed to Hickman County, Ky., in 1831, and in the fall of 1836 started to Cole County, Mo. They went by water, and when a short distance above St. Louis the boiler of the boat bursted, which delayed them so long that they did not reach their destination until early in 1837. The subject of this sketch remained in Cole County, Mo., with his parents until 1859, when he went to Grayson County, Tex. In 1860 he came to McDonald County and settled in Prairie Township, which has since been his home. Like all other men of Southwest Missouri he was compelled to leave his home during the war, and he served in the commissary department of the Indian division, in the Confederate army. His marriage with Nancy Robertson was solemnized on March 3, 1842. She is a daughter of William Robertson (deceased). To their union were born nine children, seven of whom are living, viz.: Sarah, Kate, Mattie, Lizzie, Emma, Laura and Nannie. One daughter, Mary F., was married, and died leaving three children. While a resident of Cole County Mr. Vanpool was first lieutenant of a militia company. He is a member of the Christian Church.
