Below is a family biography included in The History of Dent County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Jonathan D. Jones, farmer and stock raiser, is a native of Obion County, Tenn., born in 1842, and is a son of J. W. and Martha A. (Doak) Jones. The former was born in North Carolina, near Raleigh, in 1838, and died in Dent County, Mo., November 27, 1888, having been a resident of the county since 1855. He was a farmer, and of Irish descent, and at an early day immigrated to Tennessee, where he was married, his wife having been born in Wilson County, of that State, about 1820, and is now residing with her sons in Dent County. Jonathan D. Jones is the second of her ten children, seven of whom grew to maturity. He made his home with his parents until about twenty-one years of age, receiving his education in the district schools, and in 1861 volunteered in the Southern army, but after serving six months came home, and February 15, 1865, enlisted in Company E, Eleventh Regiment Veteran Volunteer Infantry, of the Federal army, serving until January, 1866, seven months after the close of the war. He then returned to Crawford County, Mo., where he had been married to Miss E. J. Brickey in 1863. She was born in Crawford County, Mo., in 1846, and is the mother of eight children, five now living. Her parents, Cornelius and Keziah A. Brickey, were of German descent. Since 1866 Mr. Jones has been a resident of Dent County, and in 1868 he located on the farm of 300 acres where he now lives; 140 acres of land are under cultivation, and besides this property he has a forty-acre tract of timber land. He has a good bearing orchard, and is in a prosperous condition financially. He is a Democrat politically. Mrs. Jones is a member of the Christian Church.
