He is one of nine children, two now living, born to his parents, John and Harriet M. (Taylor) Wells. The father was born in Otsego County, N. Y., in 1810, and the mother in Philadelphia, Penn., in 1820. In early days the father came to St. Louis, where he engaged in commercial merchandising, and to that city the mother came on a visit. Here they met and were married. Soon after they moved to Dade County, Mo., and here the father was engaged in merchandising, farming and stock dealing. He died in 1857. After returning to Philadelphia, the mother died in 1867.
