Below is a family biography included in The History of Barry County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. James H. Ellis was born in McMinn County, Tenn., in 1841, and is a son of Alfred and Matilda (Lanson) Ellis, also Tennesseans, where they grew to maturity and married. They came to Greene County, Mo., in 1853, and to Barry County in 1856, and finally settled in Stone County, where the father improved a large farm. He was a soldier in the Mexican War, and died in May, 1861. Of his eleven children, the following are living: James, John, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, George, William and Margaret. The mother has been three times married since the death of her first husband, and is living with her fourth husband, Calvin Corney, in Barry County. James H. Ellis has always lived in Barry and Stone Counties, Mo. He enlisted in the Enrolled Militia in 1862, and in 1863 joined the Missouri Cavalry, United States Army, and was discharged in June, 1865, at Springfield. After his return he resided in Barry County about four years, then came to his present location in Stone County, where he has a fine farm of 110 acres, with 100 under cultivation. His union with Nancy J. Hilton, which occurred in 1862, resulted in the birth of thirteen children, ten now living: John W., married and living in Stone County; Sarah E., Isaac, Alfred, Albert, Nettie, Matilda, Eliza J., Elvin, and an infant son not named. Those deceased are as follows: one who died in infancy, Ezekiel, and Mary A., who died at the age of thirteen years. Mr. Ellis and wife are members of the Christian Church.
