Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM H. HOOK was born on January 6, 1829, in Breckinridge County, Ky. His father, John Hook, was a native of Ohio, came to Breckinridge County in early life, and there married Miss Lucretia Wood, a native of Kentucky. William H. was reared on his father’s farm and compelled to depend on an irregular attendance in the county schools for his early education. After he had arrived at manhood, however, he went to Hillsboro, Ohio, and attended school, thus qualifying himself for the profession of teaching, and also devoted himself to the study of surveying. Having taught for a time, he went to the State of Missouri, and while there was employed in government surveying. From Missouri, he re moved to Kentucky, and settled in Hawesville, Hancock County, where for several years he was employed in teaching and serving the county as surveyor. He removed to Paducah in 1869, where, after teaching one year, he opened an insurance office, in which business he has been employed since. In 1882 he was elected to the office of justice of the peace of McCracken County, and now occupies that position. In Louisville, in 1864, he married Miss Hannah M. Henry, daughter of William H. Henry, of that city. His children are: Mary A., Lizzie and Mattie Hook. Mr. Hook is a member of the Masonic order and of the I. O. O. F.
