My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DR. HENRY M. GILSON was born in Danville, Vt., in 1837; was there reared and educated until he was seventeen years old, when his parents, Lewis and Ann E. (Peck) Gilson, removed to Kentucky and settled in Ballard County. Mr. Gilson there studied medicine under Dr. Stovall and Dr. Joseph Thompson; took one course of lectures in Nashville, Tenn., and in 1863, entered the University of Pennsylvania, at Philadelphia, where he graduated in the early part of 1864. He took a second course however, in 1864-65. He began the practice of medicine in Ballard County, but removed to Paducah in 1866, where for two years he practiced in connection with Dr. J. Thompson. In 1868, he was compelled by loss of health to abandon the practice, and the following year he embarked in the drug business, in which he is still engaged and in which he has been attended with good success. Dr. Gilson is a man whose word is as good as his bond. He is an honored member of the Masonic fraternity, I. O. O. F. and for several years has been president of the German National Bank at Paducah. He was married in Paducah, in 1865, to Miss Eliza J. Hobbs, daughter of Jo Sam Hobbs, and has two children, Edward H. and Mary Lizzie Gilson.
