Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

GEORGE L. SAFFARRANS was born in Memphis, Tenn., in December, 1842. His parents (both of whom are deceased) were John and Matilda Saffarrans. George L. spent his boyhood days in his native city, where he received his preparatory education. In 1857 he entered the Wesleyan University, at Florence, Ala., where he completed his studies. In the spring of 1861 he espoused the cause of the Southern Confederacy, and served in that army through the entire war, participating in many of the hotly contested engagements of the struggle. At the close of the war he became a clerk and salesman in the mercantile business. In 1869 he established himself in the grocery business at Memphis, Tenn. In 1878 he removed to Caruthersville, Mo., and engaged in business, but becoming dissatisfied with the location, he removed to Paducah, Ky., in the fall of 1881. Since 1883 he has been engaged in the produce commission business, and in the sale of agricultural implements and seeds. He is also a member of the City Flouring Mills Company of Paducah. Mr. Saffarrans was married in the city of Memphis, Tenn., in 1867, to Miss Annie Coolidge, a native of Lexington, Ky., and daughter of Charles Coolidge. To them have been born two children: George and Carrie Saffarans. Mr. Saffarans is a worthy member of the I. O. O. F.
