My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

GEORGE A. SCOTT, of the wholesale firm of Jones, Scott & Co., Paducah, was born in Jefferson County, Ky., in 1828. His boyhood days and early manhood were passed in his native county, and when of sufficient age, he adopted the trade of a tinner, serving his apprenticeship in the city of Louisville, Ky. His early experiences were similar to those of most tradesmen; he followed his trade as journeyman, until he found himself able to assume the management of the business, which he did in Louisville, in 1851. He there continued in business, with much success, for about twenty-six years, when, in 1876, he removed to Paducah, where he became a member of the firm of Emery & Scott, which business relation terminated after an existence of a year and a half. He next formed a partnership with Thomas T. Jones, under the firm name of Jones & Scott, which has recently changed to G. A. Scott, Jones & Husbands. They do a wholesale business in hardware, stoves and iron, and employ two traveling salesmen. Mr. Scott was married in Louisville, Ky., in 1850, to Miss Julia Attwell, daughter of Samuel Attwell, a pioneer of Jefferson County, Ky. Their union has resulted in the birth of five children, viz.: Leonard, Lewis, George E., Lorena and Shirley Scott. Mr. Scott is a member of the K. of H., and both he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
