Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM WEATHERSPOON was born in Fulton County, Ky., December 6, 1837, and is a son of James and Nellie (Bowen) Weatherspoon. The father was a native of North Carolina, and of Scotch-Irish descent. He came to the Purchase in 1830,and settled in Fulton County. There he entered 200 acres, and turned his attention to farming. He also taught school, and was one of the earliest teachers of the day. He died March 17, 1844. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and a class leader in that denomination for many years. His widow died in 1868. William Weatherspoon is the second of a family of five children, of whom four are now living: Robert, in Fulton County; Thomas, in the Moscow District; James and William. He left home at the age of seventeen and came to Hickman County. There he apprenticed himself and worked at the blacksmith trade for three years. In 1858 he commenced for himself, and in 1860 came to his present location. At this point he has since followed his trade. He also manufactures the Diamond Plow, and follows wood work to some extent. He owns a farm of 146 acres, of which about seventy-five acres are cleared. Mr. Weatherspoon was married January 27, 1858, in Hickman County, to Miss Susan Colon Ray, a daughter of Samuel and Susan (Litsey) Ray. This union resulted in four children: Allie B., wife of Jefferson Batts, deceased; Laura J., wife of I. B. Murphy; Kate L., wife of J. J. Gardner, and William J. Mrs. Weatherspoon died November 24, 1884. Mr. Weatherspoon enlisted in Faulkner’s battalion in November, 1861; was captured in June, 1862 and taking the oath returned home. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
