Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM P. LEWIS, was born March 8, 1840, in Robertson County, Tenn., and in 1851 removed to Weakley County, where he grew to manhood. In 1861 he entered the army, where he remained until 1864. He then came to Hickman County, Ky., where he has since resided. His father, Williamson Lewis, a native of Brunswick County, Va., was born in 1789, and died in 1873. He was the son of Harbert Lewis, of Virginia, who died at the age of one hundred and twelve years. Subject’s mother, Sarah P., daughter of Mathew Freeman, of Virginia, is now living at the age of seventy-eight years. Williamson was twice married, and his children are, by first wife, Lillian, Peggy (Collins), Lemie (Slaten), Lear (Harris), Harbert, George B. and John W.; by his second wife, Nicholas L., James M., subject, Mary J. (Seals), Elizabeth and Joseph B. William P. Lewis was married November 22, 1866. to Miss Mollie E., daughter of John and Ann E. (Grant) Salmon, of Fulton County, and to them have been born George L., Mary L., William P., Oscar M. and Blanche (deceased). Mr. Lewis is a successful farmer, having 156 acres of valuable land. He is a member of the Baptist Church, and in politics a Democrat.
