Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM B. DAVIS, Hickman County, was born February 25, 1816, in Pittsylvania County, Va.; removed in infancy with his parents to Maury County, Tenn., and in 1829 came to Hickman County, Ky., where he has since resided. His father, Daniel Davis, a native of Pittsylvania County, Va., was born in 1794, and died in 1820. He was a soldier in the war of 1812. His father, William, of Virginia, died in 1835. Daniel married Lydia, daughter of Shadrach Boaz (born in 1795, and died in 1863), and from this union sprang: subject, David J. and Constantino D. March 19, 1835, William B. Davis married Miss Mary M., daughter of Rev. Joshua and Elizabeth (Smith) Cole, of Hickman County (born 1815, and died in 1882), and to them were born Lydia E. (deceased), David W. (deceased), Sarah C. (deceased), Constantino D., William S. (deceased), Ann E. (Lester), Joshua C., Elzara F. (Scott), and Laura B. Mr. Davis is a farmer having 110 acres of fair land in a good state of cultivation. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and is identified with the Democratic party.
