Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

R. J. BUGG was born in this county, February 29, 1844, and is a son of Jesse and Mary O. (Evans) Bugg. The father was born in Muhlenbnrg County, Va., April 10, 1820, and came with his father, James Bugg, to this county in 1823. The latter settled in McCalister Precinct, on the farm now owned by M. H. Hardin. He subsequently moved to the Goodjoin Precinct, where he resided for many years. He died in this district in 1858, at a good old age. Subject’s parents are still living in this district Subject was the eldest of seven children, six of whom are now living. He remained on the home farm until the breaking out of the war. In December, 1863, he enlisted in Company A, of the Twelfth Kentucky Cavalry, and remained in active service until February, 1865, when he took the oath and came home. He commenced life for himself in 1866, and settled one mile south of where he now resides. He came to his present farm in 1871, and now owns about 330 acres, of which there are about seventy acres in cultivation. He was married October 18, 1866, to Miss Elizabeth Evans, a daughter of William and Mary Jane (Faulks) Evans. The result of this marriage has been eight children, of whom five are now living: William J., Henry T., Lou A., Dilla R. and Thomas W. Mr. Bugg and family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and he is a member of the Spring Hill Lodge, No. 574, A. F. & A. M. In 1878 he was elected to the office of magistrate of that district and is still serving.
