My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

HENRY BERBLING, Hickman County, was born February 13, 1847, in the town of Herbolzheim near the city of Freiberg, in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany. In 1862 he was apprenticed to the pottery trade, at which he served three years as apprentice; he afterward traveled over Germany and Switzerland as a journeyman potter, as was then the custom. In the fall of 1867 he was drafted for the army, but was not called into service until 1869, when he decided to try the new world instead of wearing the emperor’s coat. Accordingly he came to America and stopped in Evansville, Ind., where he worked at his trade until 1876, when he came to Columbus, and has been here in business ever since. Mr. Berbling is a member of the city council and of the K. of H. He was married in the fall of 1869 to Bernhardina Keppner; she was born in the same town as Mr. Berbling. They have four children: Charles H., Henry J., Rosa and Augusta.
