My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

ELIZA G. (BUCHANAN) REMLEY, Hickman County, was born in Lincoln County, Tenn., on August 2, 1835; daughter of Elbridge Gerry and Katherine Sidney (Garner) Buchanan. Mrs. Remley was brought up in Tennessee till the age of twelve, when the family removed to Columbus, Ky. In Tennessee Mr. Buchanan followed the business of a general merchant, but on removing to Kentucky he went into the grocery business, also keeping two hotels, the Buchanan House in Columbus, and another one in Clinton. During the war the Buchanan House was taken by the army and used as a hospital, all the furniture being broken up, and no allowance being made for it; the Confederate Army, on evacuating Columbus, forgetting all about the ruin they had caused at the hotel. Elbridge James Buchanan, a brother of our subject, served till the close of the war under Gen. Faulkner. Mrs. Remley received a good common school education. In 1853 she married Granville Remley, a native of Ohio, who came to Kentucky in 1851, and whose birthday took place on July 4, 1827. He worked as carpenter and blacksmith in Columbus up to the close of the war, also contracting for the supply of meat for the portion of the army stationed at Columbus. At the close of the war Mr. Remley had the sum of $60, and a little furniture. He then leased some property known as the Dabney farm, living on it till the time of his death in 1880. Mrs. Remley still conducts it, and has also since that time bought and paid for another farm of about 145 acres six miles from Clinton. They had a family of nine, three of whom are dead: William G., Mary (Davis), Kate (Moss), Alice H. (Fisher), James Elbridge, George A., Frank K., Henry F., and one that died unnamed. The late Mr. Remley was a Master Mason, a Baptist, and a strong advocate of the temperance cause. Mrs. Remley is a Baptist.
