Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JUDGE E. C. HODGES was born April 10, 1844 in Hickman County, and is a son of Eli P. and Elizabeth (Crosland) Hodges. The father was born in Knoxville, east Tenn., and died in 1868, aged fifty-four. When a resident of Mississippi he held the office of sheriff and various other offices, and was also engaged in milling and farming. Subject, at the breaking out of the war, enlisted in Company B, Seventh Kentucky Infantry, Confederate States Army, and served until 1864, when he was taken prisoner and confined at Camp Morton, Ind., till the close. He returned to the farm and attended school; afterward taught school a short time, then began the study of law with N. P. Moss and was admitted to practice in 1872. Soon after he was elected county attorney; held that office until 1882, and in August of that year was elected county judge, which office he has since honorably filled. The judge was married in 1876 to Emma Hayes of Dresden, west Tenn.; they have two sons and one daughter. Mrs. Hodges is a member of the Christian Church.
