My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

MISS A. M. HICKS, principal of the Clinton College, was born in Putnam Co., Ohio. She is a daughter of Ezra and Julia A. (Lincoln) Hicks. The father was born in Warren County, Ohio, and died in August, 1882, aged eighty-two. The mother was born in Virginia, and died in 1853, aged fifty-two. After attending the schools of the neighborhood, Miss Hicks went to the high school at Lima, Ohio, and in 1871 to Oswego, N. Y., and attended the normal school at that place. In 1873 she came to Paducah and was there appointed principal of the high school, holding that position one year. In 1874 she came to Clinton, and held the position of associate principal of Clinton College until 1880, since which time she has held the position of principal of the college. This school was first opened in the Baptist Church with fifteen pupils, and now has an annual enrollment of 260 pupils. On leaving this college pupils are prepared to enter any of the universities of the United States. Since the age of fifteen, Miss Hicks has received no assistance from any source, and solely by her own exertions she has supported and educated herself.
