Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN STAHL, a farmer and stock grower, was born in Gallatin County, Ky., August 26, 1852. His father, John Stahl, a native of Germany, came to America, and first settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, remaining there but one year. He removed to Gallatin County, Ky., where he lived until his death, which occurred in 1879. He served six years in the regular army of Germany, and was a member of the Protestant Church. He married Margaret Orleman, daughter of Jacob Orleman, of Germany, who bore him five sons and two daughters, the subject of this sketch being the youngest. Mrs. Stahl died in June, 1886, a member of the Protestant Church. The grandparents of our subject never came to America. John Stahl was educated in the common schools of Gallatin County, and has always followed farming. His parents settled where he now resides when he was but two years old, and where he now owns seventy-eight acres of good land. In 1878 he married Katie Hughes, of Gallatin County, daughter of Michael and Ann M. Hughes, natives of Ireland. One son blessed this union, viz., John A., born November 13, 1881. Politically Mr. Stahl is a Republican, and he is a member of the Protestant Church.
